What
is the Clean Energy Challenge?
The Clean Energy Challenge is a regional campaign,
supported by RNP, which urges commercial, industrial and government
electricity users to make meaningful committments to buy green power.
The levels of meaningful committment were established by regional
environmental groups. RNP promotes the Challenge as part of its
Go Green campaign.
Is your business
interested in buying green power? For details on what is required
to meet the Clean Energy Challenge, Click
Here.
How does meeting the Challenge
make a difference?
All told, the businesses listed below purchase over 2 million kWh
of green power a year. That prevents the creation of over 1,200
tons of carbon dioxide gas, equivalent of the environmental
benefits of:
*Not driving a car over 36,000,000 miles or
*Planting over 6,600 acres of trees.
Purchasing green power tells utilities and power providers that
there is a market for renewable energy, which encourages
them to increase investments in green power instead of sources like
nuclear, coal, and big hydroelectric projects which pollute the
air, damage wildlife habitat, and reduce our quality of life in
the Northwest.
Developers of renewable energy have to go where the resources are
located. While the Northwest has tremendous renewable energy potential,
we also need to show a strong market demand to help encourage development
of those resources. Renewable energy projects are good for the economy,
and bring dollars to our local tax bases. So your green power purchase
helps on many levels.
Business and government participation in green power programs account
for about 30% of all kilowatt hours purchased. Organizations meeting
the Clean Energy Challenge are making significant green power purchases.
For an overview of Green Power in the Northwest,
check out the report Powerful
Choices V here.
